HOW I GOT A BATMOBILE CHAPTER THREE: FINDING ALL THE PIECES!
Adam West AKA Batman, still looking great, and meeting ANOTHER generation of fans! That's my son Chris again on the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood, on the set of the HOME and FAMILY show.
Here is Bob's car, along with Adam West, and the hosts of the show, Michael Burger and that's Cristina Ferari trying on the cowl! Piece of trivia for you fans, Cristina said that day that she was on BATMAN and talked a little about the scene, the next day I had the clip from my library and blew her away when we showed it! She was amazed, as it had taken her TV exec. husband Tony months to track it down! She was a teeny bopper fan of a singing duo in one episode!
We also set up a bat climb for the show, and Chris had his cape so he took a wall walk!
This is our visit to Bob Butts Fantasy Car Ranch. "Dad, just buy it and get it over with!"
Chris has sat in more batmobiles than pretty much anyone! Bob was in the process of selling all of his cars and molds at this point, as his health was failing.
If you've seen a Batmobile in a museum, on the road or in a show, it was most probably a Bob Butts replica. This is a shot from the film "Back to the batcave" shot right outside the original batcave in Griffith park near Hollywood. It is really a tunnel that they covered with two camoflaged doors!
The batmobile man, Bob Butts! He passed away in 2002, and he will be missed. Without him, my dream would never have become a reality!
He also made a great batcycle and side car! He had the original from the film and show, and broke up the set. They are both in private collections now.
Here is a Butts car that used to be in the Klassic museum in Daytona, it has since closed and the car was sold off as an original Barris Replica. Fate unknown as the buyer wants to return it!
A Butt's car also appeared in the movie ROCKSTAR.
The problem is, the only Batmobiles on the road anywhere in the world, seemed to be on the back of Bob's transport trailers! So Chris and I took a long hard look at his kit and what he was offering. When I was shopping for a body, he was asking $25 thousand dollars just for the body and some pieces. This is no "KIT" car (or KITT for that matter!) it is a ground up build a car, and it just wasn't happening with my budget. But there was another, young skywalker.....
Another bat fan had been making Batmobiles up in Canada, eh? He had worked hard to get the car just right, and had tracked down Bob as well, and used parts of Bob's molds to pull an "anti-crime roadster" of his own!
Don from Canada had started making batmobiles off of photos and out of steel! Here is one of his 3 metal cars he finished!
I still don't know how we connected, but he kept calling and dropping his price, until I looked at my bank balance and said "OK Don, you got a deal!"
It was off to Canada with (who else!) my son Chris to "import" a "Anti-Crime Roadster" (Warner Brother's owns the word batmobile, so none of my references are to the trademarked word, just the combination of the words bat and mobile! :) Christopher's little brother Nicky and just born sister - Mindy, stayed home to keep mom happy... while Chris and I went on the ultimate ROAD TRIP!!!
